IBC & IFC Fire and Life Safety Principles
Full-day ICC Seminar (Lunch Included)

Location Details: San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins, San Marcos, TX

Program: This seminar addresses the critical concepts of the 2024 editions of the IBC and IFC regarding fire and life safety issues. These concepts provide a basis for the correct use of the codes in building planning, classification of buildings and occupancies, fire-resistance-rated construction, fire protection systems and means of egress. The content addresses issues that are necessary for many designs and plan review decisions. During this training, participants will be listening to lecture and viewing examples, as well as discussing sections of the codes that pertain to fire and life safety principles in building. This is a great program, serving as both a refresher for experienced designers, consultants and code officials and as a perfect introduction to codes for people who are new to the industry or are looking to grow their code knowledge and code application skills.

Presenter: Doug Thornburg, AIA, CBO has been actively involved in building code administration and training for 45 years. Most recently, he served as the Vice-President and Technical Director of Products and Services for the International Code Council (ICC) where he began employment in 2004. Prior to ICC, he was in private practice as a code consultant and educator on building codes for nine years, and he served for ten years with the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) as Vice-President of Education. Doug began his career working for the City of Wichita, Kansas, initially as a building inspector and later as a plans reviewer and before being selected as building codes administrator.

Doug is nationally recognized for his work in creating and presenting building code seminars, and he is also well known for educational texts and resource materials that he developed, including the IBC Illustrated Handbook and the Significant Changes to the International Building Code book series. In 2008, he was presented with ICC’s inaugural Educator of the Year Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions in education and training. He is a graduate of Kansas State University and a registered architect
