Fire safety regulations for construction sites
Location Details: IN-PERSON: San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins, San Marcos, TX
Program: This course introduces code officials and others who may be involved in construction site safety to current and upcoming codes that safeguard buildings undergoing construction, major renovation and demolition. The course will include discussion of best practices for hot work, housekeeping, storage, and site security. Students will also learn the requirement and responsibilities of the construction site fire prevention program manager and the components of a well-crafted construction site pre-fire plan.
Learning Objectives: Students will learn
- Risks & hazards on construction sites.
- Leading causes of fires in structures under construction.
- Application of model codes and standards that pertain to safety precautions during construction.
- Best practices regarding housekeeping, equipment, flammable and combustible materials, and other hazardous activities on construction sites.
- Components of a good fire safety plan and the collaborative process for plan development.
Presenter: Raymond O'Brocki, CBO, American Wood Council. Mr. O'Brocki is the Manager of Fire Service Relations for the American Wood Council. Before that he was the Chief Building Official for the City of Rockville, MD. He retired as the Assistant Fire Chief of the Baltimore City Fire Department in 2013 after having been appointed fire marshal for Baltimore City in 2008. Mr. O’Brocki served on the Maryland State Child Care Advisory Council, Maryland State Fire Code Update Committee, and the steering committee for the Mid-Atlantic Life Safety Conference. He has also served on the NFPA Urban Fire Safety Task Force and has presented at the National Fire Academy and many other venues around the country. He is a member of the NFPA 1, 101 and 241 technical committees and serves on the International Fire Code Committee. O’Brocki is a graduate of the University of Baltimore School of Law and is a licensed attorney.
