Fire Safety in the Use of Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF)

Location Details:
Online meeting - participation details will be emailed to registrants prior to the event.

Program: This presentation will explore fire-safety considerations related to the use of polyurethane foam in architectural details, such as sculpted components and interior finishes, and as a fillable foam in concealed spaces to meet energy conservation requirements. Attendees will learn about differences between foam types, how different foam types are best used in different assemblies, and about the use of spray polyurethane foams (SPF) in the following applications:

1) Wall assemblies in Types I, II, III, IV, and V construction
2) Exterior of a structure beneath cladding
3) Inside a structure where it is not protected by a 15-minute
    thermal barrier
4) In fire-rated assemblies

Attendees will also learn about applicable ICC code requirements and about inspection considerations for verifying code compliance of polyurethane foam installations.

Presenter: Mac Sheldon has worked in the spray polyurethane foam industry for 19 years, holding sales, management and technical positions with a major manufacturer of polyurethane products. Prior to spray foam he sold and distributed heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment internationally and was an HVAC installing contractor for 15 years. Mr. Sheldon is certified in WUFI modeling software and is a BPI Building Analysts and RESNET HERS Rater. He served on the board of directors for the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) for eight years, the Spray Foam Coalition (SFC) Leadership Committee for two years and currently serves on the board of the Cold Climate Housing Research Center (CCHRC). Sheldon Consulting, LLC helps contractors, distributors, manufacturers and others interested in the insulation industry with codes, compliance and training.
