Fire Containment and Firestopping Along with SwRI's Fire Technology Department Lab Tour

Program: The first presentation will be lead by the International Firestop Council and will explore how fire containment is achieved, the code requirements for firestopping, understanding the firestop “system” approach, overview of IBC & NFPA 1 firestop inspection requirements, and identify improper and proper firestop system installations. The objectives of the presentation are to explain fire compartmentation, detail penetration firestop applications & systems, review engineering judgments, and show how to perform firestop inspections.

The second presentation will be lead by SwRI Fire Technology Department Staff and will highlight the fire testing industry and the capabilities found in SwRI's test labs.


Presenter: David Mistler is the Firestop Product Manager for CEMCO. David joined CEMCO mid-2023 to assist in marketing and sales of the firestop product line. He also provides technical support for internal and external CEMCO customers, the design community and code officials. Previously he spent 13+ years as the Director of Firestop for a leading contractor. In that role they expanded to 16 locations with 6 being UL Qualified Contractor facilities. Prior to the firestop contracting business, David was with a leading construction products company for 21 years. He held various roles during his tenure to include sales/sales management, contract administration and North America firestop product manager. During that time, he contributed to the development and introduction of several firestop products that remain available to the industry today. He also influenced the development of various industry standards related to the firestop segment.

BONUS!!! Following the presentation, a live fire test demonstration is planned for our group in the fire testing laboratory at Southwest Research InstituteAttendees will also have an opportunity to tour the laboratory, where many of the standardized fire tests specified by the IBC/IFC and customized tests are conducted.  Seeing the laboratory IS A MUST for designers, code enforcers and others who uses the codes but haven't seen the tests that serve as the basis for many of the codes' requirements.
